Lower Murray Water launched the Dethridge Community Art project in response to the community’s sentimental attachment to the water wheels that have been retired as part of our water savings program.
Lower Murray Water launched the Dethridge Community Art project in response to the community’s sentimental attachment to the water wheels that have been retired as part of our water savings program.
We invited local businesses, organisations, schools, and the general public to apply by expressing how they would use, own, display, or decorate a wheel.
Applications closed on 30 June 2024, and the following is a summary of the submissions received.
Who applied for a wheel?
- 8 organisations
- 2 Aged care facilities
- 9 Primary schools
- 5 Secondary colleges
Eight organisations applied, who are keen to publicly decorate and display their wheels as part of a community art trail. Two aged care facilities also applied to display wheels privately on their sites, for the enjoyment of their residents.
Mildura’s education sector took the biggest interest in this project, with nine primary school and five colleges submitting an application to own and display a wheel on their grounds.
The remainder of applicants were made up individuals wanting to display or decorate a wheel.

- 16 applicants will decorate their wheels
- 15 applicants will display wheels in original form
Next steps
We are processing applications, with a number of applications already approved and wheels delivered. Applications that have requested sponsorship or additional LMW support will take us longer to process. We will keep you updated as wheels are made available for public display.
